There are so many self-help books out there, so the ones that we mention here are all books that we personally have read (and read again) and that currently reside on our bookshelf complete with dog ears! We have read many more books that are mentioned here of course, and we will continue to add our favourites as we go along.
TA Today, A New Introduction to Transactional Analysis
by Ian Stewart and Vann Joines
What is says on the back ...
TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS (TA) is a model for understanding human personality, relationships and communication. It was first developed by the late Eric Berne, MD.
TA sprang to worldwide fame in the 1960s and 70s through the publication of best-selling books like Games People Play, I'm OK - You're OK and Born To Win.
Since then, TA has continued to grow. Theory has been expanded, reappraised and tested by observation. In the years since Berne's death in 1970, TA practitioners have introduced new concepts and techniques that are now at the very heart of the discipline. TA has long since outgrown its media image a s a 'pop psychology'. Instead it has gained international recognition as a professional approach, aiding effectiveness in fields as diverse as psychotherapy, counselling, education, communications and management training.
In this book, Ian Stewart and Vann Joines introduce you to the power of TODAY'S transactional analysis. They present the ideas of current TA in straightforward, readable language, with a wealth of illustrative examples.
TA TODAY is equally suitable for self-directed learning or as background reading for college courses. It gives full coverage of the syllabus for the ITAA official '101' basic examination.
o Throughout the book, EXERCISES for individual and group use are integrated in the text. The authors say: 'When you have completed these exercises, you will certainly know more about yourself than you did when you started. And you will learn TA in the most effective way possible - by using it for yourself.' o
Ian Stewart, PhD, and Vann Joines, PhD, are accredited by the International Transactional analysis association as teachers and practitioners of TA.
Healing the Child Within
by Charles L. Whitfield M.D.
What it says on the back ...
The "CHILD WITHIN" refers to that part of each of us which is ultimately alive, energetic, creative and fulfilled; it is our real self - who we truly are.
Dr. Whitfield in Healing the Child Within describes the journey of discovery and healing our fears, confusion and unhappiness. This book begins where many others describing adult children of alcoholics have left off. It also describes and develops the concept of adult children of troubled or dysfunctional families in general, rather than focusing only on the alcoholic family.
Members of Twelve-step Self-help groups and Adult Children Self-help groups will find this book especially useful in their own recovery work, both within and outside of their meetings . . .
"A concise, comprehensive and rather remarkable integration of the theory and practice of healing the child within; we highly recommend this useful book."
Herbert L. Gravitz, Ph.D.
